While visiting her sister, who has fallen ill for mysterious reasons, in Bogotá, Colombia, Jessica (Tilda Swinton), a British orchid specialist, is haunted by a strange noise that keeps her from sleeping - a loud bang in her head that she decides to get to the bottom of. A sound technician who may be a hallucination helps her, she meets an archaeologist (Jeanne Balibar) who examines 6,000-year-old bones, and finally she encounters a man in the mountains, who remembers everything and therefore reduces the number of his impressions. By this point, if not before, the physical and the metaphysical, the dead and the living, the past and the present exist side by side. The first film Weerasethakul did not make in Thailand, featuring an international cast, is slow and somnambulistic like its predecessors - and its trance carries. (bik)
